Fresh, Clean Food of Ecuador vs. Polluted Food of North America

Losing Weight When Moving to Cuenca

Most people (8 out of 10) lose weight when they come to Cuenca, and are here for at least six months. It is almost difficult NOT to lose weight when living in the Andes Mountains and here’s why:

High Altitudes Make the Body Work Harder

It’s true, the high altitude of Cuenca makes the body exert itself more while doing normal day to day activities, such as walking, household chores, gardening, and even sleeping. Walking around in Cuenca uses more energy and in turn uses up more calories.

Now you might think, “Ok, I’m burning more calories so I’ll eat more.”

Right again, however, BECAUSE generally the food is not loaded down with hormones, antibiotics, and GMOs you can eat more and still remain at a normal body weight; or if you were over-weight before you came here, lose weight.

FACT: Cuenca Ecuador is free of GMO's for human consumption. Read the whole story here.

Stipulation: We’re not saying the meat you buy at the grocery store in Cuenca does not have hormones or antibiotics, but we are saying the meat has substantially fewer hormones and chemicals than meat bought in a North American grocery store. And it is also easier to get lower prices on organic food.

Put it this way, the chicken tastes one-hundred percent better in Ecuador than in North America. It is leaner and much more tender and juicy. And the eggs, well they taste really fresh as well. The flavor of the meat tells us it is cleaner and freer from harmful chemicals.

The beef in Ecuador is the same. Some people do not like the strong flavor of the beef, however, that is what it supposed to taste like when a cow is grass fed. In Cuenca the ground beef is much leaner and tastes almost like venison, but not quite.

Growth Hormones Given to Feed Animals

Why give animals growth hormones in the first place? Well, it makes the steer look fatter…and the bigger, the fatter the steer the more meat (fatty) it produces. Growth hormones make the chicken look nice and plump too, and that’s what consumers want; nice and plump. However, looks in this case are deceiving. What’s inside the meat and invisible to the human eye is unwholesome for humans and makes them grow fat too.

Abundance of Fresh Produce!

We live in a country that virtually grows all of their own food! What this means is better prices and more variety. Our family eats way more fruit since moving to Ecuador because of the abundance and cost-factor. We love all of the fresh, tropical fruits that are available in Cuenca. We don’t just eat bananas, apples, and oranges anymore; now we eat kiwi, granadillas, mangos and pepino dulce, pineapples and more! Eating more fruit and less starches and fats for breakfast and for snacks will make anyone lose weight.

Some of the produce at the Mercados is grown without harmful chemicals, but it is hard to know what is organic and what is not. However, Cuenca boasts several organic markets around the city that sell only organic fruits and vegetables. See some prices here.

BTW, both Coral and Supermaxi sell some organic produce items. Just look on the package. Often times the greens and lettuce are organically grown. That's what we like about Ecuador! Fresh Food.

Cuenca is a Walking City

Most of the expats we know (8 out of 10) walk a lot since moving here. Walking is the best exercise for your cardiovascular fitness. walking also does not harm your tendons like jogging and running does. Not only that, but walking, at a good pace makes you lose almost as many calories as jogging does!

And because Cuenca is a walking city you can virtually walk to anywhere you need to. Here’s two wonderful river walks you might like to try (videos) out. Walking to there and back makes each walk four splendid miles.

2 mile walk river walk on Primero de Mayo to Mall del Rio from Americas: http://youtu.be/xAzgkcoQbqs
This walk is almost virtually free of diesel fumes.

2 mile river walk from Tres de Noviembre to El Centro from Las Americas: http://youtu.be/Je3y384quHw

Part of this walk is free of diesel fumes.

If where we want to go takes too long to walk there, like five, six or more miles away, we might take the bus part way, get off, then walk the rest of the way; it depends a lot on time constraints and what the weather is like.

Why Some People Don’t Lose Weight after They Move to Cuenca

1. Instead of walking, they take a taxi everywhere
2. Don’t like vegetables, or, do not eat more veggies than before
3. They eat out in restaurants more because it is less expensive
4. They eat more deep fried foods
5. They cannot resist the Cuenca bakeries
6. They don’t like fruit or do not eat more fruit than before
7. They eat more fattening creams, sugary sweets and ice cream since it tastes so good in Ecuador (LOL)

Even if you do number seven once in awhile, we think you’ll still lose weight. If you have lost weight since moving to Cuenca, we and our readers would love to hear your short story of "why" you think you lost weight since moving here in the comments below.

Drive from Loja to Podocarpus National Park, Near Vilcabamba Ecuador

Podocarpus National Park outside of Vilcabamba consists of thousands of acres, numerous wildlife; flora and fauna; and several self guided walking trails. The park has longer-self guided trails you can hike, however, the brochure says it is advised to take along a bilingual tour guide for the longer hikes, but you do not have to. Podocarpus is a beautiful reserved area of Ecuador.

Acapulco Hostel in Loja Ecuador

While visiting Loja Ecuador, Brandon took a video of the hostel he stayed in; it was very well located being only 2 blocks from the main square. He said everything was good except for it was a bit noisy on the weekends, as the hostel is located right off the busy street in El Centro.

How to Be Smarter than the Average Traveler or Retiree that Moves Abroad

Jumping on the Band Wagon to the New "Best Place to Live"!

A lot of travelers and retirees are moving to Cuenca Ecuador and we all know what that means; rising prices and changes that may or may not be positive.

What happens when everyone jumps on the band wagon and goes to the city where everyone else is going? Prices skyrocket and after awhile it starts to look and behave just like a little North America.  However, it is still a developing little North America without the living standards most people are accustomed to.

So why follow the herd to the next “new”, best place to retire?

The mainstream travel magazine writers and retirement press folks make a generous living by swaying you to believe paradise is here or there or over there. And they are so good at it that many naive folks become won over and go there because, well, they don’t want to be left behind.

The other day Frank and I met with a retired couple who didn’t want to be left behind.  For the first year and a half of living in Cuenca they were spending well over their $1600 retirement budget because they were seeking the same kind of standards they were used to having in the u.s.

It took them two years of downsizing to finally be living within their budget in Cuenca. So what changed? They moved into a smaller home that rents for $300 dollars less, moved back into the smoggy, noisy city from suburban San Joaquin because the taxis from there to the city were costing well over $200 dollars per month (they were not on a bus line), and now they are barely eking out a living in Cuenca on their $1600 stipend.

Okay, so what’s the problem, you may be wondering? The problem is they are not happy now.

We've heard this sentiment before and after awhile you notice the pattern. It seems to us it is those people who came here without high expectations and believing they can live in luxury for less, that actually like Cuenca and end up staying. And it is those people who believed the hype and came here with high expectations of how they thought it was going to be, that eventually leave.  Although it is a bit deeper than that...but just something to think about.

The point: The nice couple above came to Cuenca to have the same living standards or better than in the u.s but were spending well over their budget so they inevitably had to do something, and now after downsizing they are feelings homesick for the u.s. The way their talking, we think they will be heading back to North America soon.

This nice retired couple who moved to “paradise” now feel resentful, and guess who they blame? They blame the travel retirement press folks who swayed them to believe that Cuenca was a cheap, wonderful paradise.  Do you think they are the only retired couple that feels this way?

Sadly this is a growing trend with some folks in the expat community. There are negative reports about the International travel abroad press all over the Internet from expats that were somehow swayed to believe that some cheap city they refer to is ALL GOOD with NO NEGATIVES.

House Hunters International just came out with a new coastal real estate house buying episode that woos you in with complete deception of what the Ecuador Coast is really like.  Beware if you think that Ecuador is all these programs hype it up to be because you will be sadly disappointed. Take off the blinders; that’s all.

3 Solutions to Make You Smarter and Wiser

1. Instead of following the herd to the next best retirement paradise, go the opposite direction and find your own paradise, doing your own research and checking it out using your own due diligence. This would actually make you, not only smarter but the head of the crowd and you’ll be able to get all the best real estate deals!! Oh, and by the way, don’t tell anyone either, just do it!

Did you know there are literally hundreds upon hundreds of beautiful, nice, cheap cities and towns to “go retire” / "move to" to in the world?

Think about this for a moment: if cheap is what you’re looking for then that would be where no one else is flocking to, right?

2. We’re not saying to stop reading the International retirement abroad press magazines or to quit watching the highly entertaining HHI; but we are saying to carefully glean through the information with diligence. Know what the writer is leaving out and what they are NOT telling you.  Learn to read between the lines, and never believe that anywhere is “cheap”.

It is actually a good idea to read the International travel press then you’ll know where NOT to go. Once they start pumping a new retirement city, people flock to it, prices go higher for everything, and within just a few years it becomes just another expensive Latin American city.

3. The third solution is to just stay where you are planted. Right now you have your feet firmly on the ground, you don’t have to learn a new language, you don’t have to miss your children and grandchildren and above all, you won’t have to adjust to a new culture and environment, and you won’t have to lower your standard of living like some expats do when they move to a Latin America country.

It is possible to live abroad and have different aspects of your life improved, but we don’t think delegating that decision making process, is what the wise, intelligent expat would do.  Your thoughts?

10 Warning Signs You MAY Be Paying Too Much for Rent in Cuenca Ecuador

Some of you might think you got a great deal on your rental and maybe you have. However, we know that many expats in Ecuador are overpaying for their rental house or apartment. So consider the list below to see if you may be getting gringoed on your rent.

  1. You procured your rental through an English speaking/ Ecuadorian real estate agent or online.

  2. You asked for any one of these amenities in your new place: views 2) elevator 3) by the river 4) near shopping 5) walk to Supermaxi.

  3. You took the first price that was quoted and did not negotiate.

  4. Your new place is a furnished one bedroom suite. (Tourist rental)

  5. Your landlord raised the rent after one year. (Illegal in Ecuador)

  6. You paid three months rent upfront. (The locals do not do this)

  7. You compared the Ecuadorian rental price to what you WERE PAYING in the u.s.

  8. You brought your u.s standards of living with you.

  9. You simply don’t care how much your rent is.

  10. You’re paying more than $400 for an unfurnished 3-bedroom 3-bath house, or you are paying more than $350 for an unfurnished 3 bedroom 3 bath apartment that does not have 24 hour security or elevator.

None of these are a guarantee that you are getting gringoed, but we think you should use it as a red flag, and do some more due diligence.

Are you paying too much for your rent?

Punta Blanca (Centinela) Beach in Ecuador

We're back at the beach! This time we are in Punta Blanca Ecuador. The beaches are nice with great weather; we're staying in a private beach resort (click here to get a bird's eye view) and that's why you don't see a lot of people on the beach and it is winter time in Ecuador right now.  With the Humboldt current that runs through the ocean in this area it's too cold to go in the water for chickens like Frank and me. However, the frigid water temperatures did not stop Brandon from going in!

What Electronics and (other items) Should You Pack in Suitcase to Ecuador?

Most of our long time readers know that we did not ship anything in a container to Ecuador and we are still very happy we did not go through the trouble. We packed only two suitcases and two carry-ons each. If we had to do it all over again, Frank would have packed some of his "DEWALT" tools, and Angie would have packed more clothing, (especially jeans and pants) and a couple more pairs of good walking tennis shoes. We hope this video will help you out a bit when it comes to packing your suitcases; whether you're just staying three months or moving here for good, some of these items are a must have. Remember, everything cost more here!
